Kiir names new Customs Service Commissioner General

President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Wednesday appointed Brig. Gen. Aduot Ajang Aduot the new Commissioner General of the Customs Service in the National Revenue Authority.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Wednesday appointed Brig. Gen. Aduot Ajang Aduot the new Commissioner General of the Customs Service in the National Revenue Authority.

Gen. Ajang was appointed by a presidential decree read on the state-owned television, South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) on Wednesday night and replace Maj. Gen. Akol Ayii Madut who was relieved in August 2022.

Gen. Akol was fired after the Economic Crisis Management Committee recommended to President Kiir that he be removed after corruption allegations were leveled against him when 36 customs service officers accused him of mismanagement and embezzlement of tax revenue.

A month before his dismissal, Gen. Akol had an administrative altercation with the then Commissioner General of the National Revenue Authority (NRA), Dr. Patrick Mugoya, whom he accused of making a unilateral decision to implement an exchange tax rate on imported goods. He also initially resisted the transfer of the customs service to the National Revenue Authority but later capitulated.

Gen. Akol also accused his then-boss of overstaffing the NRA and customs service without his knowledge.
