South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit made a brief visit to Uganda this morning, the presidency announced.
“Kiir has travelled to Uganda this morning for a one-day visit. He will be meeting Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda,” his spokesman Ateny Wek Ateny said.
The president’s spokesman said the meeting would focus on the implementation of the September 2018 peace deal, which was designed to end the young nation's five-year civil war.
“The region is determined to ensure that the revitalized peace agreement is implemented in letter and spirit so that the suffering of the people of South Sudan is alleviated,” he said.
He noted that Kiir and Museveni would discuss efforts to reunite the ruling party, which was splintered into several groupings in December 2013.
Ateny said Kiir would return to the country today after meetings with his Ugandan counterpart.
Kiir was accompanied by foreign minister, Nhial Deng Nhial, minister in the office of the president, Mayiik Ayii Deng, minister of trade and industry, Paul Mayom and other senior government officials.
Under pressure from the international community, South Sudan government and several rebel factions signed a peace deal in September last year.
The agreement provides for a new unity government to rule for three years, followed by a general election.
