President Salva Kiir and rebel chief Riek Machar are expected to meet Tuesday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to follow up on an agreement made a month ago to end the country’s civil war.
A source close to the talks in the Ethiopian capital said the rivals are set to meet “in the afternoon” on Tuesday, the news agency AFP reported.
The meeting is expected to take place on the sidelines of the summit of heads of state of IGAD, an East African regional organization.
Mohamed Tawakul, an expert on affairs in the Horn of Africa, in an interview yesterday with Radio Tamazuj said he expected the South Sudan crisis to top the agenda of the IGAD summit.
The political observer predicted that the two South Sudanese leaders will discuss outstanding issues including the ceasefire implementation, while IGAD will push a new agenda for upcoming talks between the two side.
Tawakul also said there have been indications from some IGAD countries that they may try to refer the matter to the Peace and Security Council of the African Union in the event that the parties fail to reach solutions.
