South Sudan President Salva Kiir headed to Sudan on Sunday morning for signing of the peace agreement on ending the conflict in the country.

South Sudan President Salva Kiir headed to Sudan on Sunday morning for signing of the peace agreement on ending the conflict in the country.

The peace deal would be the first of its kind between the government and opposition groups since a 2015 peace deal between the government and Riek Machar’s group fell apart in July 2016.

The peace agreement will be signed today in the Sudanese capital Khartoum in the presence of regional leaders.

South Sudan’s foreign minister Nhial Deng Nhial told reporters at the Juba International airport that President Kiir will link the key pending chapters on governance and security arrangements in the agreement.

“Agreement has been reached on these issues and today will mark the finalization of these two documents. Those documents will subsequently be taken by the secretariat of IGAD and incorporated back into the overall agreement on the resolution of the conflict in South Sudan and that document will then be signed and be ready for implementation, ”Deng said.

President Kiir was accompanied by senior government officials. He is expected to return home on Monday.
