South Sudan President Salva Kiir on Thursday formed a team to mediate Sudan peace talks, the presidential spokesman said.

The five-member mediation team is headed by Tut Gatluak, the presidential adviser for security affairs, Kiir’s spokesman, Ateny Wek Ateny told Radio Tamazuj on Friday.

“The minister in the office of the president, Mayiik Ayii Deng is the deputy head of the mediation team. The other members are Dhieu Mathok Diing, Manase Lomule and Akol Koor,” he explained.

Ateny revealed that the mediation team would travel to Khartoum this afternoon to brief the Sudanese government on President Kiir’s mediation effort.

“Also, the team will deliver an invitation letter to the Sudanese government to send its team to negotiate with the opposition leaders who are currently in Juba,” he said.

Ateny further said South Sudan’s mediation effort has been accepted by all Sudanese parties, pointing out that Kiir will succeed in bringing the warring parties together to reach a peace agreement.

The move comes after President Kiir met with several Sudanese opposition leaders to solve the political crisis in Sudan since the ousting of veteran ruler Omar al-Bashir in April.

Kiir’s initiative was announced last year to address issues of war in neighboring Sudan.
