South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir and former detainees have agreed to stop hostile media campaigns and advance efforts to reunify the fragmented SPLM factions during their recent meeting in neighbouring Uganda, a spokesman for the presidency said.

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir and former detainees have agreed to stop hostile media campaigns and advance efforts to reunify the fragmented SPLM factions during their recent meeting in neighbouring Uganda, a spokesman for the presidency said.

The former detainees are a group of high level SPLM leaders who were arrested and released at the start of the South Sudan Civil War in December 2013 before going into exile in neighbouring countries.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, Ateny Wek Ateny, South Sudan’s presidential spokesman, said members of the SPLM faction loyal to President Kiir and former detainees are expected to resume their meetings in Kampala on Thursday.

He further said the two sides have agreed to reunify the fragmented SPLM factions according to the Arusha agreement.

The former detainees group’s spokesman Kosti Manibe Ngai said their delegation has already travelled to Uganda to attend the meeting.

Manibe pointed out that the meeting will continue with discussions on the reunification of the ruling SPLM party in South Sudan.
