South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Thursday generously donated 100 sheep for the Muslim community during the Muslim feast of Eid Al- Adha.
The contribution from the president will be distributed to the poorest families and classified as abject poor families. This will notably ease the burden on impoverished parents who suffer arduous social pressures to meet the demands of the Eid El-Adha traditional feast.
Welcoming the contribution, Sheikh Juma Saeed, representative of the Muslim community in Juba, said: “The donation by President Kiir will be distributed to the poorest Muslim families this year. We express our deep gratitude to the president and we hope next there will be peace and stability in South Sudan.”
President Kiir also sent "warm greetings" to the people of South Sudan and particularly Muslims on the occasion of Eid Al-Adha.
He wished the people of South Sudan a joyous and peaceful Eid Al-Adha.
Thousands of South Sudan’s Muslims would gather for prayers in Juba today morning to celebrate Eid Al-Adha in the fledgling nation.
Majority of South Sudanese follow Christianity or traditional religions but an estimated 6% of the population is Muslim, according to recent researches.
Eid al-Adha is the second of two Muslim holidays celebrated worldwide each year. It honours the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Ismael, as an act of obedience to God’s command.
