Kiir dismisses Ruweng chief administrator

Sacked chief administrator of Ruweng Administrative Area, Top Monyluak

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Friday dismissed the Chief Administrator of the Ruweng Administrative Area, Top Monyluak, state media reported.

The announcement, broadcast by the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC), did not specify the reasons for Monyluak’s removal. He had been appointed to the position in May 2024, serving for less than a year.

Kiir also reappointed Stefano Wieu as Ruweng Chief Administrator. Wieu had previously held the role before being dismissed by the president in May 2024.

The president frequently exercises his authority to appoint and dismiss government officials, sometimes within months of their appointment.

The decree follows recent unrest in the Ruweng Administrative Area after armed youth from neighboring Mayom County in Unity State attacked Abiemnhom County, part of the administrative area.

Wednesday’s assault briefly resulted in the capture of the county headquarters and left at least 29 people dead, according to official figures.
