South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit met with senior SPLA generals at the State House yesterday evening to brief them about the new peace agreement and the ceasefire arrangements in particular.
The meeting resulted in the nomination of four SPLA officers to participate in a workshop in Addis Ababa as part of the ceasefire mechanism.
Speaking on Tuesday after the meeting, SPLA Spokesman Colonel Philip Aguer said the meeting was part of a process of consultations that was supposed to take place before Kiir signed the agreement.
“Today, the command of the army in all the sectors, divisions and specialized units were ordered to come for briefing and the briefing is all about the peace agreement and the implementation, particularly the issues of ceasefire,” he said.
“Out of this briefing, the command of the army has been instructed to select four officers that are going for workshop in Addis Ababa as part of the ceasefire mechanism and these four officers have already been nominated and will travel to Addis Ababa to attend a workshop on the 4th of this month,” said Aguer
“Definitely, after those workshops, there will be the formation of joint command that would be stationed here in Juba to oversee the implementation of the ceasefire,” he added.
Aguer also added that there were not many reports of fighting Tuesday in spite of earlier mutual accusations of breaking the ceasefire.
