President Salva Kiir has bid farewell to the late army chief late, Gen. James Ajongo Mawut, whose casket was being taken to Aweil for burial.

Information minister Michael Makuei said in a press statement that the body of the late military chief has been flown to Aweil state and would be buried at Bar Mayen.

“The body of comrade Gen. James Ajongo Mawut has been received and he will be laid to rest among his ancestors,” the governor of Aweil Yournew Wol said.

The head of the South Sudanese army died in Egypt last week. Gen. Ajongo, who was appointed to the position in May 2017, died at the age of 57 after a short illness.
