President Salva Kiir Mayardit has ordered a one-year contract extension for Dr. Patrick Mugoya, the South Sudan National Revenue Authority Commissioner-General.
Dr. Mugoya, a Tanzanian national, was appointed to head the NRA in early October 2020.
In a letter signed by the Executive Director in President Kiir's office, James Deng Wal, and extended to the minister of finance and planning Athian Ding Athian, Kiir directed Dr. Mugoya's contract extension.
"In light of your recent briefing to His Excellency and the stellar work that the NRA has done within one year, the President resolved that South Sudan would continue to benefit from the marked service of the Commissioner-General for the next one year," the letter read in part.
The office of the president credited the NRA boss for 'the sustained rise in non-oil revenue, as well as ongoing work to complete NRA staffing, automate tax systems, and expand the tax base'.
"Therefore, extending his contract will not only assure our progress from NRA, but it will also augur well with our general public and partners," Kiir said in the letter.
After his appointment last year, Dr. Mugoya promised to develop a strategic plan for the transparent and accountable collection of non-oil revenues. He also promised the development of long-term and medium-term plans that will bring together all the stakeholders.
The NRA, established in 2018, is mandated to among others reduce dependency on oil revenues, strengthen the non-oil revenue sector, and strengthen the expenditure control required to achieve short-term fiscal austerity objectives.
