Kiir appoints new head of Presidential Medical Unit

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Friday issued an order removing the head of the Presidential Medical Unit.

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Friday issued an order removing the head of the Presidential Medical Unit.

 The Presidential Medical Unit is responsible for the medical needs of the Office of the President staff. The unit also provides medical care to the president.

In a presidential decree read on state-run South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation, Kiir announced the appointment of Dr. Mayen Machut Achiek as the new head of the Presidential Medical Unit, after relieving Dr. Andrew Akon Akec from the position.

Dr. Mayen Achiek, who previously served as the Undersecretary in the Ministry of Health, will now lead the medical unit.

In a separate decree, President Kiir appointed the former head of the Presidential Medical Unit, Dr. Andrew Akon Akec, as the Technical Advisor to the National Ministry of Health.

The reasons for these changes have not been officially disclosed.
