South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has appointed a new committee to oversee implementation of the security arrangements as part of the 2018 peace agreement.
The new transitional committee for the implementation of the security arrangements is to be composed of 9 members.
A decree issued by President Kiir on Friday said that the committee would be chaired by Presidential Advisor on National Security Affairs, Tut Gatluak, while Presidential Affairs Minister Mayiik Ayii Deng will act as deputy chairperson.
The president appointed Peacebuilding Minister Stephen Par Kuol as secretary of the committee.
The committee members include defense minister Angelina Teny, interior minister Paul Mayom, finance minister Salvatore Garang, agriculture minister Josephine Joseph, wildlife minister Rizig Zachariah and director general of internal security bureau Akol Koor.
The president tasked the committee to oversee and coordinate implementation of the security arrangements. The new body is also tasked to accomplish unfinished tasks left by the defunct National Pre-Transitional Committee (NPTC).
The new body will be submitting its monthly written reports to the presidency.
On February 21, President Salva Kiir appointed five vice presidents, including opposition leader Riek Machar, meeting a twice-missed deadline to form a transitional government as part of a power-sharing deal signed in September 2018.
President Kiir and opposition leaders have yet to create a unified army, a key requirement of the peace deal.
