SPLM party chairman Salva Kiir over the weekend announced the reunification of split party during a convention in which Riek Machar’s faction did not participate.
The two-day convention included members of the SPLM-G10 former detainees but their leader Pagan Amum did not attend. The SPLM-In Opposition sent a representative, Taban Deng Gai, to attend the opening and closing sessions only.
Kiir appealed to all party members to reunite the people of South Sudan through reconciliation in an attempt to forget the past. He apologized for the conflict in South Sudan between his forces and those of Machar which killed tens of thousands of people.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj after the event, Taban reiterated his group’s commitment to implementing the Arusha Agreement on the reunification of the ruling party.
Taban added that they are now studying the constitution to know whether the Arusha agreement was incorporated or not.
Meanwhile, Deng Alor, the head of the SPLM-G10 group in Juba, reiterated their commitment to implementing the Arusha Agreement. He said the Arusha Agreement had been incorporated into the SPLM constitution.
Deng said that the issue of 28 states will be discussed within the party, noting that they do not want any differences with the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission.
JMEC chairman Festus Mogae said that the 28 states order is a “complicating factor” for implementing the peace agreement, Radio Bakhita reported.
