President Salva Kiir and his delegations have traveled today to Ethiopia Addis Ababa for the summit of the Inter-governmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
Minister in the Office of the President Awan Riek told press upon departure that the government is committed to bring peace to South Sudan.
“This morning the President of the Republic and his delegation are heading to Addis Ababa Ethiopia for IGAD Summit of Heads of State and Government. This is in search of peace and the continuation of the last summit that was held,” Awan said.
Kiir and his rival are expected to discuss the role and the powers of the proposed prime minister in the coming transitional government, an issue that been the main sticking point in the talks.
The SPLM-Juba faction leader Salva Kiir reportedly accepted to give the position of prime minister to Riek Machar of SPLM/A-IO but later said instead that Machar could only be a ‘non-executive’ prime minister.
“We in IGAD and the head of states agreed was that the appointed position of the prime minister in this case we have in South Sudan is non-executive prime minister,” Awan said.
