The Sudanese government has welcomed a United Nations call for opposition movements to join a roadmap for peace in the country.
Since 2011, areas like Abiye and Southern Kordofan have been contested by armed opposition groups, and an African Union led peace process has consistently floundered.
Last week, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon expressed support for that roadmap, but opposition movements like the National Umma Party, and the SPLM-N rejected the proposal.
The UN’s statement “is in the right direction, although it was late” spokesperson for Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ali al Sadig told Sudan News Agency.
Sadig said the Sudanese government is ready to sit with its political rivals and armed movements.
“The UN should not only call on those who reject the roadmap to join it, but rather use the international actors and countries that have an impact on these groups who reject the roadmap in order to force them to sit down and discuss the political solution through negotiation and dialogue” al Sadig said.
