At least two women have died of dengue fever in Bahri, Khartoum’s sister city across the Nile, a member of the medical office in Bahri’s Emergency Room has revealed.
Rayyan Hassan told Radio Tamazuj that the deceased were suffering from various illnesses and injuries. One had a fractured hipbone, and the other had hypertension and diabetes. They died due to severe hypotension caused by the fever.
Rayyan stated that dengue fever is spreading significantly in Bahri’s central and southern regions, with suspected cases reaching around 470.
She pointed out that the latest update was on April 9th, with 26 suspected cases recorded in the El Sha’abiya area, 10 in Al-Shula, 4 in the Al-Hadaf area, and 3 in El Sha’abiya South, in addition to over 30 suspected cases in South El-Mazad.
The medical office stated that healthcare facilities have been unable to provide patients with the necessary medication and supplies due to a lack of medical and technical personnel and the occupation of health facilities by armed groups.
Rayyan explained, “Dengue fever symptoms include severe headache, high fever, joint pain, and skin rash. The only treatment is panadol, taken every 4 hours to reduce fever.”
She advised patients to consume fluids to boost immunity.
The medical office in Bahri’s Emergency Room called for safe passages for medicine importation, as the security situation poses the biggest obstacle to their entry.
Since the war broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on April 15, 2023, the health situation in the country has been exacerbated.
The conflict has killed thousands and forced eight million people to flee their homes to safer areas inside Sudan or to neighbouring countries, according to United Nations figures.
