Sudanese government has criticized a statement made by the US State Department last week in which it called upon Khartoum to exercise self-restraint towards calls for civil disobedience on 19 December.

The statement expressed Washington’s concern about “threatening rhetoric” and detention of several opposition leaders in response to calls by Sudanese civil society and opposition groups for civil disobedience.

In a Saturday statement, Sudan’s foreign ministry spokesman Ghariballah Al-Khadir said that the US statement was lacking accuracy and objectivity.

He claimed that Sudan’s constitution guarantees freedom of association, publication and expression according to the laws.

Al Khadir reiterated the Sudanese government’s keenness to security, safety and properties of the citizens, stressing that the government would not tolerate any threats against the country’s national security.
