Khartoum rejects separate mediation in South Sudan war

Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP) announced on Thursday that it will not spearhead a separate approach to mediate between warring factions in neighbouring South Sudan without involving the East African regional bloc IGAD.

Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP) announced on Thursday that it will not spearhead a separate approach to mediate between warring factions in neighbouring South Sudan without involving the East African regional bloc IGAD.

In a statement in Khartoum, the NCP party promised to exert more efforts within the region in order to restore security and stability in South Sudan.

“Sudan does not want to interfere with the internal affairs of South Sudan unless the South Sudanese rivals accepted it “reads the statement.

In a meeting held in Khartoum last week, the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC), a body tasked with overseeing implementation of the signed peace accord in South Sudan, urged the Sudanese government to initiate a separate mediatory role in an attempt to restore peace in South Sudan.
