Khartoum govt rejects US statement over ongoing Darfur referendum

Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has criticized the recent reservations on Darfur’s administrative referendum expressed by the US government and called on Washington to support endeavors to bring about peace in Sudan.

Last Saturday, the US State Department said the outcome of the referendum will not be credible due to the conditions under which the vote is taking place.

The US administration deplored the lack of security and "inadequate registration" of civilians recently displaced by the ongoing fighting in Jebel Marra area.

But Ali al-Sadiq, spokesperson of Sudan's foreign ministry, said in a statement that the higher number of qualified voters in Darfur has been registered including IDPs camps across the region.

He added that the information received by the Darfur referendum commission confirmed that those who have registered to vote inside the IDPs camps roughly compares to the level of general registration, which is over 50%.

Al-Sadiq pointed out that the recent visit by President Omar al-Bashir to Darfur confirmed there was stability in the region. He noted that no incidents took place during Bashir’s visit.
