Khartoum court to sentence S Sudanese ex-rebels today

A Khartoum North court is expected today to issue a final ruling against 25 members of the Justice and Equality Movement-Peace Wing (JEM-PW) led by Bakhit Dabajo.

A Khartoum North court is expected today to issue a final ruling against 25 members of the Justice and Equality Movement-Peace Wing (JEM-PW) led by Bakhit Dabajo.

In September last year, Sudan’s State Security Prosecution accused the 25 JEM-PW members of undermining the constitutional system, waging war against the state, and fighting against the army in South Kordofan and South Darfur states.

An investigator in charge of the case said the 25 defendants hail from neighbouring South Sudan.

Defense lawyer Maaz Mohamed Ahmed told Radio Tamazuj Tuesday that the Khartoum North court would issue its final ruling against his clients today Wednesday after it was adjourned last Thursday.

JEM-PW is a former Darfur rebel group that signed peace with the government and agreed to integrate its troops into the Sudanese army. Now, however, some of their soldiers have been detained after going to Khartoum for absorption in March of 2015. Among them are South Sudanese nationals.
