Khartoum court to resume trial of student charged with murder tomorrow

A criminal trial of a university student charged with premeditated murder for allegedly being involved in the killing of a police officer during protests at Khartoum University in March is scheduled to resume on Wednesday in Khartoum.

Asim Omar Khalifa, who faces charges under article 130 of the Sudanese criminal code, is a member of the Independent Student’s Congress which is a student branch of the opposition Sudanese Congress Party (SCP).

The trial comes after the court of appeals returned the case to the Khartoum North court after rejecting a complaint for examination by the public prosecutor against the court’s decision to expel one of the prosecutors from the court and removal of his name from the prosecutors list.

For his part, Mohammed Hassan Arabi, the official spokesman for the opposition Sudanese Congress Party (SCP), told Radio Tamazuj that Asim’s case is one of the issues that will force them to overthrow the current government.

He pointed out that the trial will resumed this week in coincidence with Sudan’s civil disobedience which he said has united all the people of Sudan.
