Khartoum: Community kitchen shut after support runs out

The communal kitchen at al-Wadi al-Akhdar in Khartoum Bahri’s East Nile locality has ceased operations due to a lack of support.

Amro Habibullah, the coordinator, informed Radio Tamazuj Thursday that the kitchen had ceased operations for over two weeks now.

“The kitchen serves 700 families in the area, but has been shut down for over two weeks due to a halt in support from charities and organizations,” he said.

Habibullah clarified that the kitchen had been operational since November 2023 with support from the East Nile Emergency Room, supplemented by contributions from various organizations and the local community.

He disclosed that two children had been diagnosed with anemia because of the closure and the lack of health facilities in the area, prompting their families to seek treatment elsewhere.

Habibullah noted the intermittent support from the East Nile Emergency Room that covered two to three days, alongside a mounting debt of 700,000 Sudanese pounds owed by the kitchen.

Further, Habibullah revealed that al-Wadi al-Akhdar had endured electricity outages for over three months, compounded by a water scarcity that required sourcing from an alternative 2km away.

The situation, he said, was further compounded by the skyrocketing prices of goods in local markets.

Habibullah appealed to charitable groups to support the kitchen to resume its services.
