Authorities in Sudan’s capital Khartoum announced that they will not establish new camps for South Sudanese refugees who live in Khartoum State.
Khartoum locality commissioner Joda Osman said the identified areas where South Sudanese are accomodated are Jebel Aulia south of Khartoum and Joda checkpoint in White Nile State.
In a press statement on Wednesday, Osman said they are planning with the federal government to formulate new policies on how to treat the South Sudanese refugees.
Sudan’s government has said the South Sudanese shouldn’t be called refugees, but rather displaced people, while the United Nations rejects this.
Meanwhile, the South Sudanese Embassy in Khartoum called on the Khartoum government to treat the conflict-affected people as refugees so that international organizations can help them.
Mayan Dut Wol, South Sudan Ambassador in Khartoum, told Radio Tamazuj that South Sudanese in Khartoum were experiencing deteriorating humanitarian conditions due to lack of shelter especially those who were recently transported to Bentiu camp.
However, he said the humanitarian condition of the refugees in Khartoum is better compared to those who are stranded in Kosti town. He called on the international NGOs to provide them with help.
