Kenyatta promises to continue supporting South Sudan peace

Kenya’s president Uhuru Kenyatta said his country will continue supporting war-torn South Sudan in search for peace.

Kenya’s president Uhuru Kenyatta said his country will continue supporting war-torn South Sudan in search for peace.

“As we have in the past year, Kenya stands with the people of South Sudan in their search for lasting peace,” President Uhuru said this while addressing Kenyan lawmakers in Nairobi Wednesday.

“Equally, we have lent our support to the multilateral peace process, and we continue to urge the leaders of South Sudan to put the interests of their people and motherland above their own,” he added.

The Kenyan leader said South Sudan remains in crisis, pointing out that thousands have died while hundreds of thousands more have been displaced.

“In the year since I last spoke to the House, we have hosted hundreds of thousands of South Sudanese refugees; and we have joined friends and partners to help those still suffering inside the country,” he said.

The East African regional bloc IGAD has recently adjourned the South Sudan peace talks to 17-21 May.

Inter-Government Authority on Development (IGAD), is an 8-member economic bloc that brings together Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia, Sudan, Eritrea, South Sudan, Kenya and Uganda.
