The heads of state of Kenya, Ethiopia, and Uganda will meet with South Sudanese president Salva Kiir in Juba tomorrow.
The one day summit, to be attended by Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya, Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, and Hailemariam Desalegn of Ethiopia, is meant to accelerate the South Sudan peace process, Kiir’s spokesperson Ateny Wek Ateny said Tuesday upon returning from Arusha, Tanzania.
Kiir was in Tanzania to meet his rival Riek Machar on the sidelines of an SPLM intra-party dialogue.
“I’m happy to announce to you that tomorrow Wednesday 22 October 2014, there will be a summit between the four African leaders,” Wek said.
“The four leaders will be talking on how to accelerate the process of peace in this country and it will encompass the recently concluded agreement between the factions of the SPLM in Arusha and ongoing peace talks in Addis Ababa,” Wek said.
Spokesperson for the SPLM-Juba delegation to Arusha, Paul Akol Kordit, said the meeting between Kiir and Machar made some progress.
“The first phase of intraparty dialogue has now been completed and we shall be resuming in November to continue with the serious issues of dialogue with different groups within the SPLM party,” Akol said.
