Kenya’s special envoy to South Sudan, Kalonzo Musyoka, arrived in the South Sudanese capital, Juba, on Thursday to monitor the implementation of the 2018 peace agreement.
Musyoka met President Salva Kiir and other senior government officials to discuss the progress of the peace deal, the presidency said in a statement.
The Kenyan peace envoy would also meet signatories to the peace deal to follow up on the implementation process.
Creating a unified army and determining the number of states remain the most challenging issues in the peace agreement.
“The intention of his consultative meeting with the stakeholders and signatories to the revitalized peace agreement is to ensure that by the 12th of November 2019, all the arrangements will be in place for the formation of the transitional government of national unity,” Kiir’s press office said.
Musyoka was appointed as special envoy to South Sudan by Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta in July to monitor peace.
The Kenyan opposition figure has in the past been involved in peace efforts in Sudan before South Sudan independent in 2011.
