Authorities in Kapoeta State said they had initiated a targeted disarmament program in an attempt to end insecurity in the state.
Minister of Local Government Jafar Lowara Mosing told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday that the targeted disarmament program is now in place for any recorded insecurity incident, attributing the rampant insecurity to the proliferation of firearms in the hands of civilians.
“We have put in place a program called targeted disarmament so that any place that will be found with any crime will be surrounded and disarmed,” he said.
Lowara pointed out that cases of road robberies and killings have continued along the highway linking Kapoeta town to Kimotong.
“We have a small area because there are three communities of Toposa in Katiko, Buya in Kimotong and Didinga in Ngauro of Kaliba as places for grazing. If one wants to raid from some place but it fails, it will disturb security of civilians along the road,” he explained.
The government official said state authorities are working hard to end all forms of insecurity in order to allow free movement of civilians.
The minister urged the national government to speed up the general disarmament exercise across the country to differentiate civilians from the army.
