The Kakuma wrestling team beat the Nairobi Cougars team 7-5 in a wrestling match on Saturday at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya.
The match was organized by South Sudanese and Sudanese refugees in East Africa.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Sunday, Kakuma Wrestling Team Secretary-General John Juuk said their team was declared the winner in the friendly match for peace.
Juuk said the Kakuma team was led by Wernyang Gai from the Mundari tribe.
Gai beat Deng Panchol of the Nairobi Cougars and was declared the champion of the two Sudan’s wrestling teams in Kenya. Juuk said Gai is now ready to face any South Sudanese wrestlers abroad.
According to Juuk, the wrestling match was aimed at promoting coexistence and unity among South Sudanese and Sudanese communities in East Africa.
The Mundari and Dinka tribes represented South Sudan while the Nuba tribe represented Sudan.
For his part, the Nairobi Cougars Secretary Alier Mabior admitted defeat describing it as “something normal in any wrestling match.”
He said the match attracted more than 1,500 people.
