The commissioner of Kajo-Keji County in Yei River State has accused the armed opposition group (SPLM-IO) led by Riek Machar of allegedly kidnapping three women and detaining them.

Commissioner Amos Longa told Radio Tamazuj last week that families of those kidnapped notified authorities over the matter.

He said the women were arrested for accusing their husbands of joining the opposition group National Salvation Front (NAS).

But the SPLM-IO spokesman in Yei River State, Waya Godwill denied allegations linking the armed opposition group to the arrest of the three women.

"We do not have any information about the commissioner's accusations and if their husbands decided to join a rebel group, it is their right. Our policies do not allow us to detain women,” said Waya.

"We don’t arrest women, even if there are problems between us and their husbands," he added.

One of the areas badly affected by South Sudan’s civil war, Yei has witnessed human rights violations and massive displacement since 2016.
