A traffic police officer accused of misconduct took his life inside a traffic police cell in the capital Juba, police authorities said.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, Police Spokesperson Daniel Justin said on Sunday, a warrant traffic police officer hanged himself to death with a belt inside a traffic police cell in Juba.

According to Justin, the unnamed traffic police officer was being held at the traffic police headquarters at Bulluk.

“The officer took his own life using a belt when he was arrested for misconduct. The body was taken to the Military Hospital in Giada, so this is one of the cases we recorded during the New Year celebrations,” he said.

Justin further said police also discovered a body on Sunday at Hai Jabarona. He, however, said the security situation was generally calm in the capital Juba.

“One of the cases was registered in the Jabarona area. An unknown dead body aged around 19 was found under a tall building. The body was found dead, and a case was opened, and we are now investigating,” he explained.

The police officer said the police will continue to maintain security across the country so that citizens feel secure throughout the year.

“On the 22 December, we had a general briefing for the forces, and the same thing happened on the 31st. We briefed them, and we said since our people have appreciated you then, we need to keep the momentum at this rate. So there is a clear instruction that we need to keep the security at the same level during the normal days,” Justin said.

Justin pointed out that they found cooperation from the public during the festive season, urging the citizens to continue reporting suspected criminal activities to the police.
