Juba traders protest demolition of market shops

Local traders in South Sudan’s capital Juba protested at the Juba City Council Tuesday morning against demolition of market stalls near Juba bus station.

Local traders in South Sudan’s capital Juba protested at the Juba City Council Tuesday morning against demolition of market stalls near Juba bus station.

Juba mayor Christopher Sarafina Wani had issued directives to demolish unsurveyed areas as part of a move to reorganize the city.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj Tuesday, several affected traders expressed discontent about what they said was an unjust decision.

A woman selling vegetables at the market who was among the affected by the demolition said she is a mother of four children and that she had no other source of income to support her family besides her business.

She appealed to the municipal authorities not to tear down the market.

George Stephen, a representative of the protesters, said they held a closed-door meeting with the town authorities where they agreed to register the shops owners.

He said the traders will be redistributed inside Juba market after registration.

Stephen urged all the protesting traders to return home so that their shops could be bulldozed in a ‘good way.’

The representative further disclosed that they will have another meeting with the town mayor on the matter as soon as possible.

Radio Tamazuj could not reach the municipal authorities to comment on the matter.
