An early morning attack on vehicles along the Juba-Nimule road on Thursday has left two people dead, five others wounded and vehicles torched to ashes.

An early morning attack on vehicles along the Juba-Nimule road on Thursday has left two people dead, five others wounded and vehicles torched to ashes.

Captain David Khasmiro, the Police Inspector in Nimule town of Magwi County in Eastern Equatoria State told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that five vehicles came under heavy attack by unknown gunmen along the highway.

He said two of the drivers were burnt beyond recognition when their vehicles were set on fire by the attackers. 

“In the morning at around 6 am today (Thursday) five vehicles fell in an ambush by unknown criminal armed men and shot these people between Amee Junction and Obama village. They killed two and injured four including a child. Some have minor injuries but the dead ones were burnt inside the vehicle," he said.

Khasmiro noted that those injured including a child were taken to Nimule hospital for treatment. He added that three of the injured are Kenyan nationals.

Angela Achiro Onorio, the member of parliament representing Magwi county at Eastern Equatoria state assembly condemned the incident and called on security agencies to ensure the perpetrators are punished.

“It is a very unfortunate situation where people are dying in our country particularly in our state, where women and children are suffering at the hands of unlawful people,” she decried. 

According to the police inspector, police in the area have launched a search for the attackers.
