The government of South Sudan sent a delegation to the border territory Abyei headed by Minister of Education John Gai Nyuot who was accompanied by Chief Deng Diong Majak.
Nyuot upon arrival back in Juba today said the aim of the visit was to understand the issues and challenges of the region. He said they discussed possibilities for collaboration between the Abyei Area Administration and the national ministry.
In an interview with Radio Tamazuj, Deng Diong Majar explained that the there were three main purposes of the visit, the first being a discussion of the security situation besides considering how to return citizens of Abyei to the area.
The second was to meet with the United Nations Interim Security Force (UNISFA) in Abyei, while third reason was to see the humanitarian situation of people fleeing from Unity State into Abyei.
The visit comes at a time of insecurity in Abyei, where there are reports that Misseriya launched an attack in response to the killing of a number of their cattle at the hands of Dinka Ngok last Saturday.
Although these incidents have reportedly claimed the lives of a number of local people recently, Radio Tamazuj was unable to confirm the details.
