Juba County legislative council to investigate Kworjik-Luri killings

Members of the Juba County Legislative Council on Tuesday formed a nine-member committee to investigate the killing of seven people in the area by an alleged group of Mundari tribesmen who are suspected to have colluded with rogue individuals within the military.

Addressing the media after a sitting of the county legislative council chaired by the Speaker Robert Milla John, the chairperson of the information Committee, David Pitia, has said the committee is expected to investigate the incident and report back to the house within 14 days.

“We discussed the issue that happened in Kworjik, Luri Boma, in which some people got killed and as councillors of Juba County, we came up with a resolution in which we formed an investigation committee headed by David Pitia Yohana, Deputy Speaker of the County Legislative Councilor,” Pitia said.

He added: “The committee has been tasked to prepare their report within 14 days, and after the 14 days, the committee is expected to report back to the councillors to deliberate,” he reiterated.

He said the councillors condemned the killings and expressed sympathy with the grieving families. He has assured that Juba County legislative council will ensure that justice is served.

“The councillors condemned the incident and expressed sympathy with the grieving families and called for calm as the government has already taken the initiative to investigate the incident. As Juba County Legislative Council, we want to make sure that the perpetrators are brought to account,” Pitia said.

He revealed that the committee will conduct an investigation, document the incident, and report back to the legislative council to deliberate on their finding report.                

On Wednesday, Commissioner of Juba County Joseph Wani accused armed Mundari tribesmen of colluding with rogue elements within the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) in the killing of seven people in Kworjik.
