The Mayor of Juba City Council on Monday evening issued a local order closing local bars where local alcohol is also brewed, commonly known as Andaiat, and banned the sale of food items on busy city streets both during the day and at night.
In a local order broadcast on the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Cooperation (SSBC), Mayor Johnson Swaka ordered the closure of the local breweries and bars with immediate effect without giving reasons.
“This local order bans businesses and vendors dealing with the sale of food items along the streets and open spaces by night and day time in Juba City Council,” the order said. “The local breweries places commonly known as Andaiat are directed to close their businesses immediately.”
The mayor also directed restaurants in marketplaces to keep their premises clean and not to litter or pour water on the streets. Swaka also tasked all shops opening to main roads to monitor individuals who dump waste on the main road and said all businesses must clean their shops and paint them with the designated colors.
The mayor warned that those who contravene the order will face penalties including fines ranging between SSP 1 to 1.5 million.
Swaka directed all City Council Block Directors and security operatives to implement the order with immediate effect.
