Restaurants and tea places in several areas in Juba remained closed today following an announcement on Thursday by City Council authorities.
Restaurants owners in Jebel and Custom markets said they were told to keep their doors shut for a period of one week as City Council authorities try to intensify the fight against cholera in the town.
Hellen Elia Yusuf of Muniki said, “Here in Muniki there are many people selling foods on the road side. There are many restaurants. Some are good but others need to be closed at this time. We can see traders selling sugar cane, juice and fruits on the road side.’’
She also complained about lack of garbage collection services allowing dirt and trash to heap up on the roadsides bringing other diseases, not only cholera. Hellen asked the government to provide pipe water to the people of Juba.
Juba depends mostly on water from tankers and bottled water, but increasing poverty makes it difficult for people to pay for these services.
Earlier this week the Ministry of Health declared a cholera outbreak in Juba.
