The Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) on Tuesday elected a new executive body in Unity State after a nine-year hiatus occasioned by the conflict that plagued the country.

The new three-member body is comprised of state coordinator Chondok Maguhek, Secretary-general Yien Gattuor, and finance secretary Nyakul Mahuhek

The new Unity State UJOSS secretary-general elect, Yien Gattuor, told Radio Tamazuj shortly after the elections that the exercise was transparent and a team led by UJOSS President Patrick Oyet traveled to Bentiu to observe the polls.

“The two people competing for the position of coordinator were Luk Riak from Miraya FM and Chondok Maguhek from Kondial FM. Then for the position of secretary-general, there was Yien Gattuor from No.1 Citizen Newspaper and Nyabuoth,” he said. “And for the finance secretary position, Nyakul Maguhek, Tapchien and Badin. These are the positions that were given to us by UJOSS.”

Gattuor said Chondok Maguhek took the coordinator’s position with 14 votes against Luka Riak’s 13 votes, while the position of secretary-general was taken by himself.

He said there were a total of 27 journalists who voted.

“There was no complaint at all. The election was free and fair and everyone was satisfied with the outcome,” Gattour said.
