Journalist sues ARC for Rumbek flood damage

Radio Miraya FM journalist Manyang Mayom Meen has sued Africa Resource Corporation (ARC) road company over the recent flood damages in Rumbek County, Lakes State.

The company is linked to Senior Presidential Envoy and businessman, Benjamin Bol Mel.

Meen, who comes from Paloc Payam of Rumbek East County, accuses ARC of building the Bahr el-Ghazal roads without culverts, occasioning floods that caused displacements and the destruction of properties.

According to a summon by the Lakes State High Court in Rumbek, seen by Radio Tamazuj, ARC is expected to appear before the court on January 30.

According a report, over 50,000 households were destroyed by floods in Malou, Thoon Adueel, Nyiraany and But-thokrou.

Meen did not state the value of the destruction, but said that the damages were inflicted on houses, farms and the domestic animals. He said he wants the company to compensate for the losses that resulted from their negligence.

Meen said ARC should rebuild the houses destroyed by the floods.

“I also said that ARC should apologize over the graves that were destroyed by the floods.

“The farms that were destroyed by the floods should be compensated for by the ARC. We want this to be done legally and that is why we opened the case against them,” he said.

ARC was yet to comment on the claims.

Last year, at least three children drowned in pools dug by ARC in Rumbek East and Rumbek Centre counties.
