A journalist was detained by security forces in Wau on Saturday afternoon and held at an SPLA facility until Sunday morning. The journalist is the head of the journalists’ union in Western Bahr al Ghazal.
James Deng Dimo spent 15 hours in a cell without food and water, according to Eye Radio, which also employs Dimo as a stringer.
The journalist after his release explained that an army officer accused him of abandoning the army illegally, though he officially had left the army 10 years ago. A more senior army officer ordered the journalist’s release after finding that he had been detained without evidence.
The officer who ordered Dimo’s arrest works in SPLA Military Intelligence. His name is Athian Akol Diing.
