Teachers in government owned primary and secondary schools in South Sudan’s Jongeli State have refused to call off their open-ended strike in the state, a teacher from Bor said.
The teachers went on strike earlier this month to demand unpaid salaries since the beginning of this year.
Ruben Matiop Mayol, representative of the striking teachers in Jonglei, told Radio Tamazuj yesterday that they have gone unpaid since the last 10 months.
He further said the state government tried to persuade them so they could call off the strike, but all the striking teachers refused. Mayol stressed that they will continue with the strike until their demands are fulfilled.
For his part, Atem Mayar, Director of Planning and Budgeting in the state, said that the issue of salaries is a general problem across South Sudan. The official claimed that all schools have not been shut down despite the ongoing teachers strike in the state.
