Health authorities in South Sudan’s Jonglei state say no single cholera case has been reported in the state since June.

Health authorities in South Sudan’s Jonglei state say no single cholera case has been reported in the state since June.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, Jonglei state health minister, Dr. Angok Gordon Kuol said, “The last report we have by June the 30th this year, we did not have any new case reported.”

Gordon further said the first case of cholera in Jonglei state was reported in February this year in Panaam, Kuei and Ziam-Ziam and later it spread to parts of Bor, Twi and Duk Counties as well as some cattle camps.

“The total reported fatalities were actually 38 and the numbers of cases were 795.  This was officially reported by us (ministry), our partners and WHO,” Gordon confirmed.

The health official pointed out that the state reported a high fatality rate in April.

“The local authorities on the ground were reporting on their own but we did not take seriously what they were reporting because they did not have standard format used to report,” he added.
