At least three people, including two women, were killed, one boy kidnapped and two girls, both aged 12, are still missing in separate attacks by gunmen in different locations of Duk County of Jonglei State on Tuesday night, authorities have said.
John Chatim, the Duk County commissioner told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, “Yesterday (Tuesday) at 9 pm, a cattle camp in Pajut town was attacked by gunmen killing a herdsman but the raided cattle were recovered.”
He added: “Again, an hour later, they waylaid a group of women moving from Dukpanyang to Poktap, killing two women and kidnaping a young boy, while two young girls aged 12 each are missing.”
The local government official pointed out that no one was arrested over the incidents but that suspected bandits from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) were responsible.
Commissioner Chatim condemned the attacks and called on the GPAA to intervene because banditry impedes peace.
Meanwhile, Joseph Mayen Akoon, the state police commissioner said no one was arrested because the assailants escaped and that the area remains calm despite the incident.
“They attacked and killed three people and injured two others and ran away,” Akoon said.
For his part, John Abulla, the deputy GPAA chief administrator, condemned the attack as unfortunate and said he had not yet received any information about the incident.
