The Jonglei State government says primary and secondary schools in government controlled areas will open on 2 February.
State Minister of Education Tut Kon Nyang said the opening date is based on a national calendar from Juba.
“According to what we received from the national ministry that schools to reopen in February, and we have already encouraged schools to open earlier for registration and that 2 February will be the day to start teaching across the state,” Tut Told Radio Tamazuj from the state capital Bor.
Tut said they have started registrations of students and pupils.
The Minister stressed that they have made some repairs on schools affected by the ongoing conflict across the country.
Tut did not know the exact number of schools that would reopen in February.
“I cannot really be able to tell you the exact number of schools that will reopen this year because the list is not present here with me but we have a lot of schools that will reopen since the number of population increased during their return to the state,” he said.
Tut said he has asked schools in rebel controlled areas to open at the same time with the help of humanitarian agencies.
He said they are going to open two schools in Ayod County after discussing with the County Commissioner.
Tut added that a total of 67 male and female Jonglei students began sitting for their South Sudan National Secondary Examination on 19 January in Bor and Juba.
