Dozens of primary and secondary school teachers in South Sudan’s Jonglei State yesterday went on the street complain of delays from the Ministry of Finance to implement the national government’s decision to increase the salary of public servants after a devaluation of the currency last year.

They also complain that there were no promotions of teachers since 2008.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Secretary of the Jonglei Teachers Union Gai Chau said they handed a petition to the state government through the ministry of education since October.

But he pointed out that the state government did not look into their demands, which forced them go protesting of the reluctance of the authorities to meet their demands.

“We have stopped teaching and since 4th of November there is no school which is open. Primary and secondary schools are all closed. They are not working at all,” he said.

He stressed that they will continue with the strike until the decision is implemented.
