Communities in South Sudan’s greater Jonglei region should embark on farming to fight looming hunger as the parties implement the revitalized peace deal, an official advised.
Addressing a peace rally in Bor town on Saturday, the country’s agriculture minister, Onyoti Adigo said food security is necessary for the sustainability of the 2018 peace accord.
“We are poor, but in a rich country. As the agriculture minister, I want you people of greater Jonglei to embark on agriculture,” said Adigo.
“Our first enemy is our stomach. If we are hungry, this [peace] deal will not be implemented because we will fight again,” he stressed.
Adigo pledged government’s support for local farmers in the region.
Despite the huge agricultural potential South Sudan possesses, only about 5 percent of the country’s arable land is reportedly cultivated.
