The head of the government relief agency in South Sudan’s Jonglei state says three people died of suspected cholera infection after an unconfirmed outbreak in the western part of the state.

Jonglei Relief and Rehabilitation Director Gabriel Deng Ajak yesterday told Radio Tamazuj that the three reported fatalatiies and 17 suspected cases were only from Twic East County and not elsewhere in the state.

He said the report was brought to the national government to carry out investigations. The World Health Organization has yet to confirm the outbreak in Jonglei, though one in Juba was formally declared last week.

Deng’s remarks come after the Twic East County Dau Akoi said in a report on Sudan Tribune website that the disease has hit Nyuak and Kongor districts including the county headquarters of Panyagoor.

“Three people died and 17 others are now admitted” to the hospital, said Akoi in Bor on Sunday.

Returns to western Jonglei

Meanwhile, the RRC official has reported that thousands of people are returning from Lakes into western Jonglei state owing to improving security in Bor area.

Deng said that the security situation is calm in Bor and Pibor areas and this is encouraging many displaced to returned home.

Deng also stressed that the displaced returning from Mingkamen camp in Lakes state were not doing so because of lack of food or other rations there but because they wished to come back to Jonglei.

He pointed out that last week aid workers distributed food items to almost 40,000 displaced from Duk County that were displaced to Twic East County after attacks in previous months.

He describing the situation of the Duk displaced in Twic East as calm and claimed some displaced are even returning to Duk.
