The governor of South Sudan’s Jonglei State Philip Aguer Panyang has banned the driving of heavy trucks in the state during the rainy season, saying it destroys the roads.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Saturday, Aguer said the ban would help keep the roads within the town and those connecting the counties in good shape as heavy rains continue.

“Our roads are cut off during the rainy seasons. To avoid this, I banned these heavy trucks, especially dumpers during rains but for small cars including NGOs’s they have to wait for 24 hours after it rained,” Aguer said.

“It will not affect delivery of relief items because if we don’t do it this way, then roads will be destroyed and this will be costly,” he added.

The governor also pointed out that his government will arrest and fine those who will defy the order.

In May, authorities in Jonglei’s Twic Centre County also banned driving within the county for hours after it rained.
