Jonglei government launches probe into Friday’s football match incident

An investigation into an incident in which security forces disrupted a football match in Bor town of South Sudan’s Jonglei State was launched on Tuesday, a state government spokesperson said.

An investigation into an incident in which security forces disrupted a football match in Bor town of South Sudan’s Jonglei State was launched on Tuesday, a state government spokesperson said.

On Friday evening, security forces fired several bullets into the air at the Freedom Square as they disrupted the qualifier match for South Sudan’s championship following a standoff between youth and sports minister and football players with their fans.

The match was being played between the Salaam FC and White Bull FC.

Addressing reporters in Bor on Tuesday, Atong Kuol Manyang, the state information minister said the state governor Philip Aguer formed an ad hoc committee to probe into the Friday’s incident.

“Deputy Governor Agoot Alier is heading the committee. There are a lot of factors to look into. For example, what occurred, and between who and who and where their security involved and why,” Atong said.

The minister pointed out that the committee will present its findings to the governor as it finishes its work. “I am not sure about the numbers are given to the committee, “She added.

Atong, however, urged the locals to be calm as the state government resolves the matter.
