The government of South Sudan’s Jonglei State has banned the playing of some local songs saying they incite violence among communities in the state.

Jonglei state minister of information Atong Kuol Manyang told Radio Tamazul on Friday the ban was necessary to de-escalate simmering tensions among communities in greater Twic and greater Bor.

Kuol said there is a wide circulation of local songs that promote hatred and division in the state.

The state official called on radio stations and community members to heed to the law saying anyone found composing or playing such songs for entertainment will be arrested.

He also pointed out that the ban will be extended to foreign songs that they consider immoral to children.
